I have been involved at the nexus of government and commercial interaction and decision making for many years and use that experience to analyse and advise on a range of policy, political and project issues.
There remains a big gap between the commercial and government worlds and whilst experience tells me that will remain, I am convinced that with the best available information to all parties and a willingness to acknowledge, if not understand, the others' position better decision making can occur.
I refer to this with tongue firmly planted in cheek as the 'Cusworth Maxim of Government':
'For any decision that is taken, government must demonstrate three things: Certainty, Transparency and Accountability.'
Certainty (make a decision), transparency (why did you make that decision) and accountability (who is accountable for that decision) are some pretty obvious and simplistic tests government should undertake but it often proves an impossible task and why it is my continued focus to maximise opportunity and minimise risk through the provision of quality insight and impartial risk analysis.
I provide advice and leadership on related issues to extend a deeper level of insight and analysis beyond just a government relations perspective to offer commercial clients clear pathways for action and how to factor in 'government risk' dynamics for decision making (our new Risk Suite is a tool to assess that risk). I also support government clients better understand industry dynamics and barriers to reform.
I am a keen observer seeking to identify opportunities where the innovation of private and social enterprise can deliver on government policy outcomes, particularly in service delivery. This is not a zero sum game and government is slowly realising the opportunity to paint the big picture and invite the innovators to work out the solution. I have supported or led projects including those of my own design in different fields of service delivery including transport.
